Abstract: Demographic research is very important in a nation. In 1955 Universal Primary Education (UPE ) failed in Western Nigeria . In 1958, it failed in Eastern Nigeria, while in 1976, the nationwide Universal Primary Education (UPE) collapsed. These programs failed because they were formulated and implemented without the input of reliable data from demographers. Similarly, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) cannot be realized in Nigeria without the input of reliable data from the demographers. From demographic research, we can obtain the following information: (i) Ages and sexes of the population and how the relative number of each sex age-sex group is changing. (ii) The proportions that are single, married, widowed, and divorced .(iii) The causes of death and how these causes vary with age, sex, education, religion, occupation, lifestyle and other characteristics. Without these data, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of educating children, combating diseases and using resources wisely cannot be accomplished. Although, these data ought to be available from our 2006 census results, it is a known fact that what has been made public is a little more than the male-female analysis in all the local government areas in Nigeria. With the male –female data, it is not possible to hope to implement and accomplish the Millennium Development Goals in Nigeria. Since it is not possible to depend on the Nigerian census to have immediate data to work with, it becomes necessary to depend on researches conducted by different demographers in different parts of the country. This paper demonstrates the various ways in which demographic research can help in attaining the Millennium Development Goals in Nigeria.
