Abstract: This is a preliminary report of an ongoing day case cataract surgery as an outreach programme by the Eye Department f the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin City. This is the first time Cataract Surgery (Day Case) Outreach of this nature is being carried out in this part of the country. Being the first, several difficulties and constraint were experienced namely, poor turn outof patients, difficulty in mobilizing the patients and problems with the selection of appropriate health centers. Sight was restored in 15 eyes of 13 patients in a 3 day Cataract Surgery Outreach. All the patients had intracapsular cataract extraction using a cryoprobe. There was only one failed cryoextraction, which was converted to an unplanned extracapsular extraction. Operative and postoperative complications were few and there was no case of infection. All operations were carried out by the Consultant and 2 senior Residents. The patients accepted this form of surgery because it was more time saving and more cost effective for them. Other tertiary health institutions are advised to adopt this approach as it may be one of the strategies for clearing our huge national backlog of cataracts.
