Abstract: This paper discusses the role of GIS in infrastructure development and Management. A definition of GIS is provided and analyzed and the fundamental components of the system presented. The unprecedented ability of GIS to integrate all kinds of information makes it a valuable tool for the planning design construction and management of infrastructure. Such integration the paper argues provide significant opportunities for application such as management of projects specific data including design parameters, construction market analysis, selection of construction methods and techniques and facilities management. Finally, the paper examines selected areas for application of GIS in facilities delivery process in a district in Benin City and discusses the need for awareness by engineers on the application of GIS in their practices. Such awareness includes potential benefits, the commitment required to achieve these benefit and opportunities provide by the system in both services and efficiency in the present and development of infrastructure.
