Abstract: This paper focused on the importance of leadership role in ensuring the attainment of organizational goals. Leadership was defined and some theories and researches on leadership were presented. The appropriateness of the theories and research findings were also highlighted in order to know how and when they could be applied or not applied. Trait, behavioural, situational contingency and systems approaches were discussed. There was no consensus on any ideal method of application, as many variables will have to be considered. The implications of these, therefore, are that leader characteristics, available resources, decision role or organizational structure must be considered before a predication of leader effectiveness can be determined.
