Abstract: Studies have shown that drop out from school is a global phenomenon. In Nigeria adolescents drop out of school for various reasons. The purpose of this paper is to investigate reasons for drop out from school among adolescent in two states (Abia and lmo) in Nigeria. The descriptive survey method was adopted for this study. A checklist on perceived reasons for drop out was used in gathering information from the respondents. Sample size comprised of students who dropped out of school and later re-enrolled in four secondary schools in each of the states. Data were analyzed using percentages. Poverty had the highest percentage 71.3% for lmo State and 46.0% for Abia State as the perceived reason for drop out of school in these states. The desire to engage in business enterprise (47.8%) and poor academic performance (46.6%) were important factors that led to school drop out in Abia State. In Imo State the desire for early marriage (40.6%) was also a major contibutory factor to school drop out. It is recommended that government and non-governmental agencies should put in place income generating ventures or factories where citizens could be engaged in, so as to enhance their economic status. In addition, the desire for early marriage and engagement in business enterprise by adolescent should be strongly discouraged.
