dc.description.abstractThe study investigated academic staff turnover in Nigerian Universities for the period (1990 – 1997) with respect to the rates. Four research questions were raised and answered, using the questionnaire developed by the researchers. The sample comprised of eight universities, 442 academic staff and 44 former academic staff. The data obtained were analysed through the use of descriptive statistics. The findings showed that the average turnover rate for the period was 16.18% and a total of 1,476 lecturers left the universities permanently. The study also showed that the professors had the highest average rate of turnover (20.88%); the social sciences lecturers had the highest average rate of turnover of 20.58% and the females had a higher average turnover rate of 18.99%. Based on these findings, a recommendation was made for policy options to avert the trenden_US
