|Abstract:||A Simple syringe ‘viscometer’ for measuring plasma viscosity has been described. The apparatus was found to be highly reproducible, with a coefficient of variation of 0.64 percent. Normal mean relative plasma viscosity was 1.67 + 0.09 in a control group compared to 1.80 +0.13 in a diabetic group (t = 5.5935; p < 0.001). There was no statistically significant difference attributable to sex in either controls or diabetics. Corresponding estimation of plasma fibrinogen concentration was also done and the association of fibrinogen and plasma viscosity discussed. The present techniquefor measuring plasma viscosity is inexpensive, simple, reasonably accurate and is capable of differentiating normal and hyperviscous plasmas.|
